Reels vs. TikTok vs. Stories: Where Should Your Brand Invest?
I create content for Instagram Reels, TikTok, and Instagram Stories every week. Each platform serves a different purpose, attracts a different behavior, and delivers different results for brands.
Here is what I have learned about each format from 190+ branded posts.
Instagram Reels — the all-rounder
Best for: Brand awareness, reach, discoverability, evergreen content
Why it works:
- •Reels have the longest shelf life of any format — they keep getting views for weeks or months
- •Instagram's algorithm pushes Reels to non-followers, giving brands exposure beyond the creator's existing audience
- •High production value is rewarded — polished transitions, good lighting, and storytelling perform well
- •Saves and shares are highest on Reels, which signals genuine interest
What performs best: Storytelling reels (not just product demos), before/after reveals, "day in my life" with natural product integration, recipe or tutorial content
What doesn't work: Hard sells, talking-head ads, content that looks like a TV commercial squeezed into vertical format
My data: Reels consistently deliver the highest reach per post. My Hellmann's reels hit 2.2M views because the format rewards content that keeps people watching.
Production scope: Each reel includes concept development, filming, editing, and publishing — a full creative package
TikTok — the authenticity engine
Best for: Younger demographics, viral potential, raw authenticity, trend-riding
Why it works:
- •TikTok's algorithm is the most democratic — a video from a small account can reach millions
- •The audience expects and rewards "imperfect" content — overly produced videos actually underperform
- •Trends move faster here, so timely content gets disproportionate reach
- •Comment sections are more active and genuine
What performs best: Trending formats adapted to the brand, genuine reactions, humor, quick tips, "get ready with me" style content
What doesn't work: Repurposed Instagram content (audiences can tell), overproduced videos, content that takes itself too seriously
My data: TikTok delivers more volatile results — some posts barely register, others explode. The average is lower than Reels, but the ceiling is higher.
Production scope: Lower production expectations than Reels, but creative adaptation still takes time
Instagram Stories — the trust builder
Best for: Deep engagement, direct response, product education, audience conversation
Why it works:
- •Stories feel intimate — it's like talking directly to your audience
- •Interactive features (polls, questions, links) create two-way communication
- •Story series (5-10 frames) can tell a complete product story
- •Link stickers drive direct traffic to websites or product pages
What performs best: Behind-the-scenes content, honest product reviews, step-by-step tutorials, "swipe up to shop" sequences, Q&A about the brand
What doesn't work: Single story with just a photo and tag, overly scripted content, stories without interactive elements
My data: Stories have the lowest reach per piece but the highest engagement rate and best direct response (link clicks, DMs). My story series regularly get 50+ DMs asking about featured products.
Production scope: A typical story series includes 5-8 frames with interactive elements like polls, questions, and link stickers
The comparison table
| Metric | Reels | TikTok | Stories |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reach | Highest | Variable | Lowest |
| Shelf life | Weeks/months | Days/weeks | 24 hours |
| Engagement depth | Medium | Medium | Highest |
| Direct response | Low | Low | Highest |
| Production needs | High | Low-medium | Medium |
| Brand safety | High | Medium | High |
| Audience age | 22-40 | 16-30 | 22-35 |
My recommendation by campaign goal
"We want maximum awareness"
Go with Reels. 2-3 high-quality reels will reach the most people and keep working for months.
"We want to drive traffic or sales"
Invest in Stories. The link sticker and intimate format drive the most direct action. Pair with 1 reel for awareness.
"We want to reach Gen Z"
TikTok first, with reshare option to the brand's own TikTok channel.
"We have a full campaign budget"
The optimal mix: 2 Reels (hero content) + 1 Story series (conversion) + 1 TikTok (younger reach). This covers awareness, engagement, and conversion across platforms.
The repurposing advantage
One thing brands don't always consider: content created for one platform can often be adapted for others. A reel concept can be re-shot in a more casual style for TikTok. Behind-the-scenes from a reel shoot becomes great story content.
When brands book a multi-format package, the per-piece cost drops because we're working from one creative concept, not starting from scratch each time.
This is where ongoing partnerships really shine — I learn what works on each platform for YOUR specific product, and optimize accordingly over time.
